Learning Ranger volunteer

Why do we have Learning Ranger Volunteers and what do they do?

Having Volunteers in the Lemur Walkthrough, Wallaby Walkthrough and Feed the Lorikeets gives Volunteers the opportunity to chat to even more of our guests about the animals and spread the message of saving wildlife together.

Learning Ranger staff are based in our ‘Lemur Walkthrough’* , Wallaby Walkthrough and ‘Feed the Lorikeets’ exhibit, plus they deliver a range of guest talks and feeds across the zoo. Learning Ranger Volunteers support these staff in a variety of ways. Volunteers enhance the guest talks and animal feed talks by assisting staff with the use of props and biofacts, and taking the opportunity to engage informally with guests after the talk has finished.

Who are we looking for?

  • Friendly and confident people who are at ease speaking to guests of all ages.
  • We’re not looking for experts, just an interest in wildlife and conservation, and of course, people!
  • We want people who are flexible and enjoy learning new things.
  • Happy being outside in all the weather that Bristol can throw at you!
  • Reliability and regular attendance.  We would like Volunteers to attend one day a week, from 9:45am to 4.30pm in the summer and slightly shorter hours in the winter.

What’s in it for you?

By becoming a Learning Ranger volunteer you can…

  • Meet new people.
  • Enhance your communication and customer service experience.
  • Learn more about wildlife and conservation.

"Not a weekend goes by that I don't love volunteering at Bristol Zoo. I not only get to be part of a charity that does so much to educate people on conservation, but I get to spend time with and learn about  the animals, and also spend time with people who are there for the same reasons. It's a privilege to be part of Bristol Zoo Gardens." Howard, Learning Ranger Volunteer
